About Our Project

Over the past few years and especially in the wake of covid-19, countless children all across New Zealand have been missing out on playing sport due to the costs involved. When families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads, the idea of providing their children with something as necessary as swimming lessons is completely unachievable.

Our group acknowledges that we are children who have been lucky enough to take part in and experience numerous different sports without the worries of wondering when our next meal will be put on the table or when we can next lace up our boots for a footy game.

This is why for our project, we have teamed up with the Community Sports Bank, a non-profit initiative run by the Wellington City Mission that provides children with the necessary resources to fully participate and thrive in sport. To help the Community Sports Bank provide even more children across Wellington with the necessary resources to get involved in sport, our group will be hosting a school-wide sports gear drive from the 22nd of June to the 25th of June 2021. Students and staff are encouraged to donate any old sports clothes, shoes or equipment that they may have laying around their homes.

On top of this, a few of our team members will be fundraising throughout the term to provide the Community Sports Bank with brand new sports gear that they can send out to their local sports clubs, committees and Whanau.

What is the Community Sports Bank?

The Community Sports bank is a non-profit initiative run by the Wellington City Mission that provides children with the necessary resources to fully participate and thrive in sport based activities.

The aim of the community sports bank project is to reduce/eliminate the cost of equipment for those in need and increase sport participation. They have 9 sites spread throughout the Wellington and Kapiti region, which are open to donations most days.

"Help kids play sport by donating new or good quality sports equipment to your local community sports bank."

For more information about the project, please contact Wellington City Mission on 0800 245 0900 or communitydevelopment@wgtncittymission.org.nz or visit their Community Sports Bank Facebook page.
